Apprenticeship - continued

This is Morioka's present kiln. When I worked there we fired a kiln similar in size to this, once every month or so.

It was a tremendous amount of work, making the pots, preparing the 8 tons of wood. At the time, Shige didn't have much money to buy prepared wood for firing so three of us would go in his two ton truck and work all day collecting a truck load of logs. Then we'd chain saw the wood, and split it by hand. I had lots of practice to learn how to chain saw and split wood!
