I learned everything about clay -
throwing pots, cutting and
splitting wood, building and
firing kilns - as well as an
attitude toward work and an
understanding of the aesthetic.
There is a Japanese word that
describes this aesthetic: "shibui",
meaning simple, quiet, serene
yet sophisticated, honest and
powerful beauty. I remember the
first time I saw one of Shige's
unglazed wood-fired pieces - it
seemed so dark, so unfinished,
yet I was captivated by it's
quiet, compelling mystery.
Over time, I absorbed Shige's passion for clay
and pots and came to the realization that this
discipline is a grounding, centering force in
my life. Working with clay became a life for me,
a way, a path to a powerful and satisfying world.
